Overview
The diatom wiki is currently set to allow the following file extension types: 'png', 'gif', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'pdf', 'ogg', 'zip', 'xls', 'doc'. Additional file types can be included on request. In order to reduce page download times, it is recommended that file uploads be kept as small as possible - particularly for image files associated with pages. The recommended image size is 150kb, but larger files can be uploaded.
How to Upload Files
- Locate the "Upload file" link at the base of the left-hand menu, under the heading "toolbox". Note: this option will only be available if you have logged in to your account.
- Click the link, then browse to the file you wish to upload.
- Select it and confirm the upload.
Note: A new page will be created that will display your file. For non-image files, a media page will be created - for image files, your image should appear on this page. In necessary you can upload a new version of the file under the same name by selecting the link to "Upload a new version of this file".
How to Link to your Uploaded File
The page that is created when you are finished uploading a file should be titled something like:
You can use this reference anywhere on the wiki to insert an image.
A similar method can be used for media files, for example:
[[Media:YourExcelFile.xls]]
In many places in the Diatom Wiki, templates have been created to maintain a constant appearance. It may be necessary for you to utilize gallery tags to present images on some pages. For more help on passing images through gallery tags in templates, see this link: Using_Templates#Passing_a_Gallery_as_a_Variable
How to Find Files that have been Previously Uploaded
The wiki automatically generates a gallery of images that have been uploaded, displaying them in chronological order. You can always find this gallery by going through the "Special Pages" link in the toolbox menu or simple follow this link: Special:Newimages
