Areola, Areolae

  1. Regular perforations in the valve wall, typically covered by a velum, often marked by more or less elaborate multi-angular walls or ribs (Hasle & Syvertsen, 1996)
  2. Regularly repeated perforations through the basal siliceous layer occluded by a velum. There are three basic components: the chamber or passage through the siliceous layer, the velum, and the foramen. Areolae of this basic structure are of two types (poroid and locular).
